A Brief History of Nanaimo
Nanaimo is a city with a rich and colorful history. Situated on the east coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, its history is a story of an interwoven tapestry of indigenous heritage, European exploration, and a vibrant evolution into the modern era.
For many generations before European settlers arrived, the area was inhabited by the Snuneymuxw First Nation who are part of the Coast Salish people. They called the area "Snuneymuxw," which the later European settlers interpreted as "Nanaimo."
The Snuneymuxw utilized the abundant natural resources of the region, particularly the rich marine life of the surrounding waters, for their sustenance and trade. The turning point in Nanaimo's history came with the eventual arrival of European explorers in the late 18th century.
